New Jersey Geological Survey DGS98-1 Monochromatic Bit-Mapped Image of New Jersey Planimetric Base Map (1:500,000 scale) METADATA 1. IDENTIFICATION INFORMATION 1.1. CITATION Monochromatic Bit-Mapped Image of New Jersey Planimetric Base Map (1:500,000 scale) By G.C. Herman N.J. Geological Survey Digital Geodata Series DGS98-1 1.2. DESCRIPTION 1.2.1 ABSTRACT A bit-mapped image of the U.S. Geological Survey 1:500,000 scale, planimetric base map for New Jersey has been compiled by the N.J. Geological Survey. The monochromatic image was scanned at 400 dots-per-inch resolution from a stable-base, mylar map. The image was georegistered and rectified to the 1983 North American Datum (NAD83) in State plane coordinate feet using the ARC/INFO Geographic Information System. The registration process used four links corresponding to 1-degree intersection points from a geographic grid covering New Jersey. The image was processed after registration to increase the clarity of the image. Post-processing steps included: 1) removing line boundaries for built-up town areas over 10,000 population; 2) removing population integer codes corresponding to lines specified in the previous item; and 3) removing the 1 degree geographic grid lines. The bit-mapped image file uses an uncompressed tagged image file format(TIFF). Image registration parameters are included in an accompanying ASCII text file. 1.2.2. NAME OF DATA base500.tif and base500.tfw 2.1.1 DESCRIPTION OF THE TYPE OF DATA Monochromatic bit map (TIFF format) at 400 dpi resolution and corresponding world-coordinate reference file in an ASCII text format. 2.1.2 DATA SOURCE The planimetric base map is a 1:500,000 scale, reverse-reading, base-positive mylar map on file at the offices of the N.J. Geological Survey. The base map was compiled, edited, and published by the U.S. Geological Survey 1927 North American Datum. Following is a summary of other base map source parameters. Source Data: U.S. Dept. of the Interior Geological Survey topographic maps U.S. Dept of the Army Corps of Engineers topographic maps National geodetic vertical datum: 1929 Publication date: 1978 Lambert conformal conic projection with standard parallels of 33 degrees and 45 degrees. 2.1.3. DATA ORGANIZERS Gregory Herman scanned, processed, and wrote metadata for the image. 2.1.4. DATE OF COMPLETION February 23, 1998 2.1.5. DATA AUTOMATION AND ACCURACY The planimetric base map was scanned using a CalComp ScanPlus II scanner set at 400 dpi resolution. Other scanner settings include filters for removing speckles smaller than 3 pixels and optical threshold value of 170. The scanner accuracy is +-.25%. The image was saved as an uncompressed TIFF file and rescaled by 50%, resulting in a resampled image resolution of about 200 dpi. The image was registered and rectified into NAD83 State-Plane-Coordinate feet using five links corresponding to 1 degree tics on the image. Registration errors for the image are listed below in Section 2.1.5.1. The image was then processed using a bit-mapped image editor to remove line boundaries for built-up town areas over 10,000 population, corresponding population integer codes, and a 1 degree geographic grid. 2.1.5.1 IMAGE REGISTRATION SPECIFICATIONS The registration parameters are: Scale (X,Y) = (209.540,209.750) Rotation = 0.000 degrees RMS error (image, cover) = (0.226,47.321) Link Evaluation : [ In Coverage Coordinates ] Link Id Calculated (X,Y) True (X,Y) Distance 1 354190.482,789570.607 354190.482,789531.992 38.616 2 630222.569,789519.636 630222.569,789519.631 0.005 4 350085.537, 61068.502 350085.537, 61029.847 38.655 5 352155.459,425158.797 352155.459,425236.073 77.276 The calculated RMS error indicates that the image accuracy satisfies National Mapping Accuracy standards for the 1:500,000 scale (Not more than 10% of points tested shall be in error more than 1/30 inch). ********************************************************* 3.
